I came across this chart recently comparing healthcare spending and life expectancy across a few countries. The numbers may not be exact, but the ballpark is accurately indicative, with the common sense message hard to ignore. Italy, the UK, and Canada all spend far less per person on their healthcare, yet people there live longer on average than we do here in the U.S. For a nation that spends more than anyone else, that gap should give us pause. As a Doctor, I see how those costs show up in real life, without universal healthcare in the US, patients delay care, struggle with insurance approvals, or sometimes face impossible choices between medical bills and basic needs. As the government reopens and discussions continue about spending priorities, we’re expecting healthcare costs to rise yet again. It’s frustrating to know that so much of that increase won’t translate into better care, healthier mothers, or stronger outcomes for families. We can do better, our system is broken, we need to better invest in prevention, primary care, maternal health, and true universal access for everyone. Healthcare should be about keeping people well, not just about paying more. www.ruthhaskinsmd.com #betterhealthcare #obgyn #ladydocfolsom #ruthhaskinsmd
