Keep the love

Love is all around us, something we should never forget.

This week has been challenging to say the least with regards to healthcare changes within the government. So perhaps a little tongue in cheek but RFK Jr. says we shouldn’t recommend COVID vaccines to pregnant women anymore. Neat. Love when politicians with zero OB training rewrite the prenatal guidelines.

Also: measles is making a comeback - because why not - the NIH and CDC are getting their budgets gutted, and someone let AI write a major government health report. Spoiler: the studies it cited don’t exist. Profound and telling indeed.

Anyway - hug your OB, vaccinate your kids, and maybe don’t take medical advice from guys who think ostriches will save us from bird flu.

Today, we pause to remember, honor, and mourn the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom is never free. We reflect with gratitude on the cost of liberty and the courage it demands.

Not so Beautiful

As a physician, I’m deeply concerned about what’s buried in the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” just passed by the House.

This isn’t just a budget. It’s a direct hit to the health of millions of Americans.
The bill proposes $880 billion in Medicaid cuts over the next decade — a lifeline for low-income families, children with disabilities, and seniors in nursing homes.

It eliminates enhanced subsidies for Affordable Care Act plans — the very assistance that helps a 62-year-old diabetic patient afford insulin and doctor visits. Without it, premiums soar and coverage evaporates.

We’ll see millions lose coverage. That means more untreated illness, more preventable hospitalizations, more lives cut short not by disease — but by policy.
This isn’t just numbers on a spreadsheet. These are real people. My patients. Your neighbors. Our parents and children.

Healthcare is not a luxury. It’s not partisan. It’s a basic human need.
We must do better.

RFK Jr. Says He Doesn’t Give Medical Advice — But That Is His Job!

Before I start writing about what I really want to discuss, this is a wonderful photo by a local photographer Soroush Mostafanejad taken yesterday on his walk in Fair Oaks.

Sometimes it's good to let a little time pass, let the dust settle, before reacting - it helps achieve a more objective view:

During a recent congressional hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told lawmakers, "I don't think people should be taking medical advice from me." This, in response to a question about whether he'd vaccinate his own children during a major measles outbreak.

But here’s the problem: as the nation’s top health official, giving clear, science-based guidance is part of the job. Deflecting responsibility undermines public trust—especially during a health crisis.
Even more concerning, Kennedy is backing deep budget cuts to the very agencies responsible for protecting public health, including an $18 billion cut to the NIH.

Leadership requires clarity, not retreat. If the Health Secretary won’t speak clearly on vaccines, who will?

Vaccines Save Lives. Period.

Despite current anti vaccine rumblings, please remember, vaccines are one of the greatest success stories in public health. They’ve helped eliminate smallpox, nearly eradicate polio, and protect us from diseases like measles, HPV, influenza, and COVID-19.

•Prevent illness and hospitalizations

•Protect vulnerable loved ones (babies, elders, immunocompromised)

•Reduce long-term complications from diseases

•Help communities thrive by preventing outbreaks

•Save time, money, and lives

Science isn’t perfect, but vaccines consistently prove their power to prevent suffering.

Let’s keep choosing facts, compassion, and health.

Happy Mother's Day

To all the incredible mothers I’ve had the honor of caring for—and to my dear friends and fellow women walking this beautiful, challenging path of motherhood:
Today is for you. For your strength, your tenderness, and your tireless love. Whether you’re expecting, holding little hands, or guiding grown hearts, you are seen, valued, and deeply celebrated.
Here's a small poem from my heart to yours:

For All You Are, Mom
You held my hand, then let it go,
So I could walk, then run, then grow.
Through every high, through every fall,
Your love, unshaken, stood through all.
You taught me grace, you taught me truth,
You gave your strength, you gave your youth.
No crown of gold, no worldly prize,
Outshines the love behind your eyes.
So here’s my heart, with thanks sincere--
For every hug, each whispered cheer.
You're more than words could ever say--
My rock, my guide. Happy Mother’s Day.

Wishing you joy, rest, and love today and always. 💗

Ovarian Cancer

On World Ovarian Cancer Day it’s an excellent opportunity to shine a light on this silent killer.  Known as the “disease that whispers,” it often goes undetected until it's advanced. That's why awareness can save lives.
What is Ovarian Cancer?Ovarian cancer begins in the ovaries—part of the female reproductive system responsible for producing eggs and hormones. It’s one of the deadliest gynecologic cancers because it’s usually diagnosed late, when it's harder to treat.
How to Spot the Symptoms:Many early signs are subtle and easily mistaken for other common issues, but persistent symptoms matter. Look out for:
  • Bloating that doesn’t go away
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Fatigue, back pain, changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss
If these symptoms occur more than 12 times a month, see a doctor. Early detection increases survival rates dramatically.
Why Does It Happen? The exact causes are unclear, but risk factors include:
  • Age (most common in women 50+)
  • Family history of ovarian or breast cancer
  • BRCA1/BRCA2 gene mutations
  • Endometriosis or never having been pregnant
What Can You Do?
  • Know your family history and talk to your doctor about genetic testing if needed
  • Don’t ignore ongoing symptoms
  • Get regular pelvic exams
  • Support and share awareness today
Every voice helps. Share this post to help others listen to the whispers of ovarian cancer.

Today we celebrate the victory of the Mexican army over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. While it’s not Mexico’s Independence Day, it's an important symbol of resistance and unity – and a great day to celebrate and enjoy Mexican culture, music, and amazing food!
