We are witnessing an unprecedented wave of health-related budget cuts, with 20,000 layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services - gutting key roles at the FDA, CDC, and NIH. Among those affected are top scientists leading public health, cancer research, and vaccine and drug approvals. These cuts cripple our ability to respond to health crises like the ongoing measles outbreak and the spread of bird flu. Major reductions have also hit the National Center for Environmental Health, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. At the CDC, critical programs for workplace safety, HIV prevention, injury prevention, reproductive health, smoking cessation, and violence prevention have been dismantled or severely weakened. Despite claims of prioritizing chronic diseases, sweeping cuts have hit the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
